Combined Upload Instructions
Instructions for the combined upload of Course Coordinates and Landmarks

You can use the upload to upload course coordinates for a course or to upload landmarks for a course or both (at the same time). If you are upload landmarks only the course needs to have course coordinates already.

Google Earth is a free tool provided by Google, you can download it here

Basic coordinate mapping involves marking the tee location, and the front, middle, and back of the green. There are 2 methods supported, using a single Path for the entire course or marking each location with a Placemark (you do not need to do both in a single mapping). Both create equally good results, using the Path method can be faster once you get used to it.

Common Steps in Google Earth
  • Input the address of the course in the "Fly To" bar on the left. At this point you will see one of the following:
    1. A single search result, and the map view should automatically move to center on this result
    2. A list of search results, review these and select the one that matches the course you are looking for
    3. A message displaying that Google Earth is unable to find a match. Should this happen try using a nearby address, or remove part of the address, for example leave the street number off, or remove the street section all together. Then see if you can find the general area and then locate the course on the map view.
  • Create a Folder and name it something that lets you identify the course. You will add the course mapping and / or landmarks to this folder. Once ready you will save out the folder for upload to the TeeDroid website.
  • Once you have completed your mapping, click the Folder and save it out in kml. Make a note of the location as you will need to be able to find the file when you upload it on the teedroid website.
Mapping with Folder/Path
  1. Add a Path to the Folder (from Common Steps) and name it: Course
  2. Once the path is created, move the map view over so that you you can see the first tee. For tees choose the furthest tees location, only one tee location per hole is required. Click the location you have chosen.
  3. Then scroll over to the green and click the front edge of the green next, then click the middle of the green, and finally the back of the green
  4. Continue the same Path by scrolling over to the next green and repeat adding the tee, front, middle, and back. Do this until you have marked all the locations for all the holes in order.
  5. You can move the mouse over a point in the path, then click and hold the left mouse button to drag the point (while path dialog is open).
  6. If you have accidentally missed a hole or point, click the last point before the missing one, then click the location you would like to add (while path dialog is open).
  7. Be sure to mark the middle in the center of the green, the front and back on the edge of the green in line with the direction of the fairway.
Mapping with Folder/Placemarks
  1. For each hole add a Placemark for the tee, front, middle and back of the green
  2. The format for this is [hole number]-[T|F|M|B]. For ex the first tee is "1-T" (not including "), and the ninth front is: 9-F, etc.
  3. If your Placemark ends up outside the Folder, then you can drag it back into the folder
  4. It is easier to see the exact position of the placemark if you change the graphic from the map pin to a target reticle. Click the icon next to the name field on the placemark dialog
  5. You can move a placemark by moving the mouse pointer ontop of the icon on the map, then click and hold the left mouse button and drag the icon to the new location.

Landmarks Mapping is very similar to mapping with Folder/Placemarks, with the addition of more codes you can specify plus you can use more Google Earth geometry types. You use landmarks to specify the locations of bunkers, water, and other hazards on course.

Landmarks come in 4 types; Single Point (Placemark), Reach and Carry (Path), Area (Polygon - displays 4 corners and center distances), and Advice (general information does not display a distance). To add a Reach and Carry landmark you would add a Path to the Folder, the first point will be the Reach, and the second point the Carry. For Area landmarks, the first point has to be left reach, after that add 3 more points in order either clockwise or counter clockwise. Use Area landmarks for large hazards such as water.

For each landmark you specify the hole and the type, the type will be automatically expanded into a longer title for the landmark. You can also provide a description of the landmark inside the Description field (of the Google Earth geometry dialog. The format for landmarks is [hole number]-[code]. If you do not find a matching type for the landmark you would like to add you can use OTHER. For OTHER you need to specify a couple of additional information: [hole-number]-OTHER-[custom title]-subtype. Subtype can be one of marker, target, bunker, water, hazard, green, other. For ex:
1-OTHER-Water Hazard-water
4-OTHER-Electrical Post-other
8-OTHER-Fairway Narrows-other
